Literacy Little League builds reading skills and lasting connections at Thomas Edison Language Institute

At Thomas Edison Language Institute, a group of dedicated volunteers is helping students strengthen their reading skills through a unique tutoring program called Literacy Little League.

Through the program, volunteers serve as one-on-one “coaches” for third and fourth-grade students, meeting multiple times a week during the school day to provide individualized reading and writing support tailored to each student’s needs.

Founded nearly 30 years ago by retired San Juan Unified psychologist Dorothy Marshall, the program continues to thrive today under the leadership of retired San Juan Unified teachers Lisa Abcarius, Michelle Parsons and Tina Casanova. More than 30 volunteer tutors currently participate, offering consistent support to students.

Originally designed as a group reading intervention, Literacy Little League has evolved over the years to include individual support, writing instruction and participation for fourth-grade students. Today, its individualized approach gives students focused academic support while building confidence and a stronger enthusiasm for learning.

“It’s a connection between the students and the tutors,” said Abcarius. “The kids come running off the playground before their recess is even over because they are looking forward to working with their tutor.”

For the facilitators and volunteers alike, the experience is equally rewarding.

“The opportunity to work one-on-one with the students is priceless,” said Parsons. “I feel I have a purpose, and the children are doing their very best to improve in reading.”

What began as a small reading intervention has grown into a powerful community of support where students not only improve their reading and writing skills, but also gain confidence and a love of learning. 

Through strong partnerships and dedicated volunteers, San Juan Unified continues to expand its efforts to support student literacy success and create lasting educational impact.
